Learner goal in learning the language

                        to use language for communication.

The Scientific Method

The development of the scientific method is usually credited to Roger Bacon, a philosopher and scientist from 13th-century England, although some argue that the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei played an important role in formulating the scientific method.

Later contributions to the scientific  method were made by the philosopher Rene Descartes.

Although some disagreement exists regarding the exact characteristics of the scientific method, most agree that it is characterized by the following elements:

  1. • Empirical approach

  2. • Observations

  3. • Questions

  4. • Hypotheses

  5. • Experiments

  6. • Analyses

  7. • Conclusions

  8. • Replication

 Criteria for Research Problems

Good research problems must meet three criteria (Kerlinger, 1973).

1) First, the research problem should describe the relationship between two or more variables.

2) Second, the research problem should take the form of a question.

3) Third, the research problem must be capable of being tested empirically (i.e., with data derived from direct observation and experimentation).

A 'true’ experiment includes several key features:
1) one or more experimental groups;

2) random allocation to control and experimental groups;

3) pretest of the groups to ensure parity;

4) post-test of the groups to see the effects on the dependent variable;

5) one or more interventions to the experimental group(s);

6) isolation, control and manipulation of independent variables;

7) non-contamination between the control and experimental groups.

Друзья мои, у меня нет возможности каждому из 250 человек открывать доступ по его желанию.

Это отнимает очень много времени и заставляет выполнять множество ненужных и длительных операций, заполнения форм, ввода паролей и пр. операций, далеко не всегда увенчивающихся успехом.
У каждого из вас в должна быть корпоративная почта.
Постарайтесь ей воспользоваться для корпоративных целей.
Если это не поможет, я буду обращаться в службу поддержки.

What is Technology?

"I’ve searched on the internet and I've read a lot of information about the topic, including articles about how technology has been a blessing for us. These advances made our daily lives easier with decreased hard labor and increased mechanize labor. Technology has made modern life considerably free from stress or more comfortable than the life that was in the past long years.

The word "technology" is really extensive or broad that it could cover all. It helps us in so many ways, as well as being a teacher.

Technology helps us to be more effective in teaching students and to do PowerPoint presentations in the lectures even in our meetings. It enables us to perform better that we could ever imagine, do things quickly and efficiently, which totally saves our time and money.

It’s not only for educational reasons but also for building up communications, business, and to make our society better."

Canale and Swaine (1980) describe the four dimensions of communicative competence.

  • Grammatical competence: refers to what Chomsky calls linguistic competence.
  • Sociolinguistic competence: refers to an understanding of the social context in which communication takes place (role relationships, shared beliefs and information between participants …)
  • Discourse competence: refers to the interpretation of individual message elements in terms of their interconnectedness and how meaning is represented in relationship to the entire discourse or text.
  • Strategic competence: refers to the coping strategies that participants use to initiate terminate, maintain, repair and redirect communication

For researchers, the first step in achieving multicultural competence is becoming aware of how their own worldviews affect their choice of research questions

(American Psychological Association [APA], 2003).

Answer:

Novelty is a very important aspect of research. It is true that research has progressed tremendously in the past two decades due to the advent and accessibility of new technologies that enable goods and data sharing. Consequently, it might be difficult to find a topic about which nothing is known or no literature is available. However, there is still a lot of scope for progress.

For finding novelty in your area of research, you should do a thorough literature search to find out what is known and what are the gaps which need to be clarified. There might be topics that are studied but reports are still contradictory. Researching this can lead to novel leads. Many times, a novel research might just mean disproving what is already known. The novelty will largely depend on your in-depth knowledge of the field. With the increasing amount of research output, many high impact journals are now seeking highly novel information to publish.

Therefore, please do a thorough literature search and I’m sure you will be able to identify the novelty in your area of interest. You may ask your teacher these questions to clarify your doubts about novelty in your specific subject area.

Q: What is novelty in research?

1 Answer

Razvan Baba, junior academic

Answered Feb 9, 2018

A made-up term that highlights the arrogance and self-delusion of the authors when describing their work.

Many serious scientific journals have a soft ban on the use of the world “novelty”, i.e. be prepared for a serious line of questioning because technical reviewers will go out of their way just to point out how not-new your claims are.

Virtually 99.999+% of the research work is incremental. The new elements they bring is either in the method, connecting the dots in a new way that was not previously thought of before, or observation of an effect that was not seen before. This does not dilute the achievement of the authors of the work.
However, taking already existing building blocks and making a new figurine out of the said blocks can be argued that in itself is not novel. It is a highly skilled art form, and not easy.

In the simplest form, novel means “hasn’t been published before in a journal”. Which is not to say that someone before hasn’t thought or worked on it, or did not have the funds and resource (human or otherwise) to crystallise it into a low societal value “high impact factor”[1] scientific publication.

"Literature reviews are absolutely indispensable when planning a re-search study because they can help guide the researcher in an appropriate direction by answering several questions related to the topic area.

  1. Have other researchers done any work in this topic area?
  2. What do the results of their studies suggest?
  3. Did previous researchers encounter any unforeseen methodological difficulties of which future researchers should be aware when planning or conducting studies?
  4. Does more research need to be conducted on this topic, and if so, in what specific areas?

A thorough literature review should answer these and related questions, thereby helping to set the stage for the research being planned."

The Test below is for full-time learners.

Below is the Test for distant learners!

In the following quote, Kathleen Bailey (2005: 3) describes the different types of competence that an individual needs to master in order to be an effective speaker:

"There are several important models of communicative competence (see, especially, Bachmann, 1990, and Canale and Swain, 1980), all of which include some form of sociolinguistic competence, or the ability to use language appropriately in various contexts. Sociolinguistic competence involves register (degrees of formality and informality), appropriate word choice, style shifting, and politeness strategies. Another important element of communicative competence is strategic competence. In terms of speaking, this is the learner’s ability to use language strategies to compensate for gaps in skills and knowledge. For example, if you don’t know a word you need to express your meaning, what strategies can you use to make your point? A fourth component of communica-tive competence is discourse competence “how sentence elements are tied together,” which includes both cohesion and coherence (Lazaraton, 2001, p. 104). Cohesion is “the grammatical and/or lexical relationships between the different parts of a sentence” (Richards, Platt, and Weber, 1985 p. 45). Cohesion includes reference, repetition, synonyms and so on. In contrast, coherence involves “how texts are constructed.” (Bailey, 2005: 3)

David Bohlke (2014) provides a complementary perspective on what it means to have competence in speaking another language. He identifi es four componen-tial skills: phonological skills, speech function, interactional skills, and extended discourse skills. For L2 learners to communicate effectively, they must have a reasonable com-mand of grammar and vocabulary. But this knowledge alone is insuffi cient. Learners need to learn a wide range of other skills. Four skill areas of speaking competence are required for effective communication (Goh, 2007).

1. Phonological skills. Learners need to be able to blend the phonemes of the language they are learning. In addition, they must use appropriate stress and intonation.

2. Speech functions. Learners need to achieve specifi c communicative functions in social and transactional exchanges such as agreeing with someone, asking for clarification or offering a reason.

3. Interactional skills. In face-to-face exchanges, learners must manage interactions by regulating turn taking, redirecting the topic, and negotiating meaning, in addition to initiating, maintaining and closing a conversation.

4. Extended discourse skills. Learners must often produce long stretches of uninterrupted language and they need to structure what they say so it is easy for others to follow. This requires the use of established conventions for structuring different kinds of extended spoken language such as narrative, procedural, expository, or descriptive discourse.

In addition to these four skills, the use of conversation management strategies can lead to more effective speaking. These may be strategies for enhancing one’s message such as asking questions in different ways in order to be less direct, or dealing with communication breakdowns, such as rephrasing to clarify meaning. Such strategies have been identi-fied and categorized and are now part of the syllabi of several language textbooks. (Bohlke, 2014: 123)
